Caring for Your Aluminium Decorator Pieces

Aluminium Care and Cleaning Instructions

Aluminium is very durable and requires very little maintenance to keep it looking like the day you bought it. We have provided some useful tips of things to avoid and how to care for your product.

NEVER place aluminium products in the dishwasher as dishwashing powders and liquids will damage the aluminium surface. Warm soapy (normal dish washing products) water and a non scratching cloth should take care of most cleaning situations. Be sure tthoroughly dry immediately after washing to avoid spots or discoloration.

Aluminium does not like extended exposure to water and other liquids (vinegar, oil etc.). This means that all aluminium items exposed to water and liquids should be washed or rinsed after use and then thoroughly dried.

Any water sitting on the outside surface of vases should be wiped dry. The inside surface of the vase, which is not visable will discolour but this has no detrimental effect (other than discolouration) to the aluminium.

Polished aluminium may develop a soft patina over time and lose some of its shine. To restore (or maintain) the polished finish, a metal polishing product can be used to softly buff the surface.  There are various products available, they will proviude a moderate degree of cleaning and surface restoration.

To remove scratches and some more serious discolouration, a stronger metal cutting compound can be used such as Shine. This is a paste that is applied with a soft cloth and then polished off.  The polishing cloth will go black as it cuts through the surface aluminium.  Shine can be found at Bunnings and is very effective. Other aluminium or metal polishing compounds can also be used.
